Are Scooby Doo and Shaggy Stoners?

Scooby Doo and his male companion Shaggy are well known fictional characters, with their mischievous and playful behaviour. They are known, only recently as stoners on the internet, as they follow the stigma of a typical ‘’stoner”. Below is a brief list of all the quirks that Scooby and Shaggy possess, that make us believe that they could be stoners.

Firstly and one of the most common stoner traits is the constant desire to eat, because the part of the brain that controls urges and desires, such as snacking or “munchies” is stimulated by the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. Generally, these neurons are responsible for this suppress of your appetite. Thus in a “high” state, the brain is fooled into being hungry. Dear old Scooby and Shaggy are very guilty of this, as they are always seen hunting for Scooby Snacks.

The next main link that we form between Shaggy and Scooby Doo is the paranoia. One could argue that their paranoia stems from their day job, hunting ghosts and other unspeakable evil, helping solve mysteries in their own special way. The likely link is the heightened senses experienced when THC enters the hypothalamus and elevates any emotions. Therefore the sense of fear is heightened more than Wilma or anyone else in the group, even in a scary situation. Looking back, they were always the most freaked out, compared to the rest of the group. In the same way that alcohol consumption can elevate your sense of aggression or confidence, cannabis can have the same effect, albeit emotions or feelings.

Another link that Scooby and Shaggy share with modern ‘’stoners” is “hot boxing”. The term “hot boxing” refers to smoking marijuana in an enclosed space such as a car (Mystery Machine) or a room, to allow the marijuana to be enclosed in the room for a greater effect. First-hand smoke and second-hand smoke are enclosed in the same area, resulting in little to no smoke escaping, meaning a longer and greater “high”. The Mystery Van that Scooby and Shaggy travelled in, was always “hot boxed”, as the van was always filled with smoke on the inside.

All over the internet there is a lot of speculation whether Scooby Doo and Shaggy were regular marijuana smokers and very little concrete evidence is known to avid viewers of Scooby Doo Where Are You? Therefore we could even go as far to assume that the name Mystery Machine could be ambiguous, besides the obvious explanation that the van is used by the group to solve mysteries. It could also be seen as a Mystery Machine, as the very fuel that the vehicle runs on, could be a mystery to everyone, possibly even hemp. To conclude, the fact that Scooby Doo and Shaggy could be “stoners” is inconclusive, as the whole topic is open to interpretation. The director of the show stated that Scooby and Shaggy were not intended to be “stoners” and it’s merely coincidence. Therefore the conclusion is yours to make.
