Ingredients

  • 5 oz hemp oil
  • 5.2 oz olive oil
  • 5 oz coconut oil
  • 6 oz distilled water
  • 2.3 oz lye
  • 0.7 oz fragrance/essential oil (optional)

Equipment

  • Rubber gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Large stainless steel or enamel pot
  • Wooden or plastic soap mold
  • Weighing scales
  • Hand stick blender
  • Two 3 qt size plastic pitchers
  • Two thermometers
  • Two wooden spoons
  • Measuring cup, 2 or 3-cup size
  • Freezer paper
  • An old blanket or large rag
  • Piece of cardboard cut to fit the mold as a lid

Method

1. Wearing your goggles and gloves, weigh out the lye into one of the two pitchers and the distilled water into the other. Slowly add the lye to the water pitcher and stir until dissolved. Set the mixture on one side for a few hours while it heats up.

2. In the meantime, line your soap mold with freezer paper and weigh out the hemp oil, olive oil and coconut oil into an enamel or stainless steel pot and heat until the oils reach a temperature of between 100 and 110 degrees F.

3. When both the oils and the lye mixture have reached roughly the same temperature, add the lye solution to the oils and stir continuously.

4. Next, add any essential oils or fragrance to the mixture and continue to stir, or switch to a stick blender to speed up the tracing process.

5. When you see the mixture trace – or leave tracks – it’s time to pour the soap batter into your mold, cover with the cardboard lid and blanket, and leave to stand for about 18 hours.

6. Remove the soaps from the mold and let them air on an open drying rack – you can leave them in loaves or cut into bars at this point.

For the best quality soap, let the bars/loaves stand for between four and six weeks before use.
