Benefits of Hemp Hearts

The base of this recipe is hemp hearts (aka, hulled hemp seeds):

  • Quality protein. Hemp seeds are a great source of omega 3 & 6 and are a high quality complete protein. Four tablespoons, or ¼ cup, of hemp seeds contain 15 grams of protein.
  • Nutrient rich. They also contain high concentration of vitamins and minerals such as iron, vitamin E, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid and many other micro-nutrients that your body needs.

Ingredients You’ll Need

In this recipe, nutritious hemp hearts are blended with water and flavorful mix of herbs creating a creamy salad dressing that can easily double as a dip or spread.

Here is everything you’ll need:

  • Hemp hearts
  • Water
  • Lemon
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Salt
  • Chives
  • Dill
  • Cilantro and/or parsley

How To Make Hemp Dressing

  • In the blender cup, add the hemp hearts, garlic and onion powder, salt and water, minus the herbs, and blend until smooth, about 30 – 45 seconds. If dressing is too thin add more hemp hearts, if too thick add a tad more water.
  • Next, add in the herbs and blend until incorporated.
  • Lastly, taste for flavor.

And now this simple creamy dressing is ready to enjoy!

  • ½ cup hemp hearts (hulled hemp seeds)
  • ⅓ cup water, plus more as needed
  • 1 medium lemon, juice of
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon mineral salt
  • a few strands chives, broken into 1 inch pieces
  • a few sprig leaves fresh dill
  • a few sprig tops fresh cilantro and/or parsley


Using a small blender (or double recipe if using a regular blender), combine ingredients, minus the herbs, and blend until smooth. If too thin add more hemp hearts, if too thick add a tad more water to thin.

Add in the herbs and blend until incorporated. Taste for flavor adding anything extra to suit your taste…more lemon?…more herbs?…more garlic or onion powder? Chill before serving.

Makes about ½ cup, serving 2 – 4.

This blueberry hemp seed salad is packed with healthy ingredients, lots of texture, and drizzled with a delicious creamy garlicky tahini dressing. Vegan, nut-free, oil-free.

Blueberry Hemp Seed Salad with Creamy Tahini Dressing

I love a good salad. But a truly GOOD salad – a salad that isn’t super boring to eat and has lots of texture and flavor. One of my all-time favorites is this vegan Caesar salad, but when I want something lighter I typically go for a basic salad with seeds or nuts and a simple dressing.

Hemp seeds can always be found in my fridge – they are an earthy, softer seed perfect to add into smoothies, on top of peanut butter toast, in yogurt, and of course, in salads.

Because of their health benefits, hemp seeds are easily one of my favorite seeds. Here’s why:

  • Hemp seeds are rich in both Omega 6 and Omega 3
  • They are a great source of plant-based protein
  • Hemp seeds are good for digestion, as they contain both soluble and insoluble fiber

I use these glass containers for meal prep. They are super durable and I love that the lids snap securely on. Plus, glass is much more sustainable than plastic.

But hemp seeds are not the only spectacular component in this salad! It also calls for fresh blueberries and a creamy tahini dressing.

The tahini dressing couldn’t be any easier to make. You don’t need a blender or anything fancier than a spoon or a whisk. No cashews or vegan mayo needed for this creamy dressing. Just tahini, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper, and water to thin it out to the consistency you like.

Tahini is another healthy fat that I try to incorporate into my diet! It’s also rich in calcium, vitamin E, and many B vitamins.

Salad Meal Prep Tips

On the weekend, one of my goals is to get some things meal prepped. If that’s just slicing up some veggies and fruit, great. But I try to prep at least 1 meal to eat when I don’t have time to make something else. Salads are great for that!

For this hemp seed salad, simply put the greens, hemp seeds, blueberries and cucumbers in one container and the dressing in another. Is there anything more unappetizing than soggy salad?

Just note that the sliced cucumbers will not stay crisp for more than a couple of days. If you plan on eating it past day 2 or 3, store them in a separate container and cover the slices with water to keep them fresh.
