Beyond Premium Tea and Modern Steepware
We partner with CBD brands to create & co-pack premium Private Label CBD Tea
The pairing of tea with CBD is a natural marriage of natural, relaxing plant-based elixirs. Formulating the right blend of CBD with tea, herbs, roots, flowers, and other botanicals should be done with both the desired functionality and a target flavor profile in mind. Whether they want an energizing tea or a relaxing tea to chill out, customers will also want to choose from fruity, citrus, or chai tea flavors, to name a few options. Creating the perfect blends can help ease a customer into the ideal state, both physiologically and physically, to best enjoy the benefits of their tea.
Q&A on CBD Tea — with The Tea Spot CEO, Maria Uspenski
Q: What exactly is CBD?
A: Cannabidiol (CBD) is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. Cannabinoids are the active ingredients found uniquely in cannabis. The one you’d most likely heard of before was THC, which is the psychoactive cannabinoid, Tetrahydrocannabinol. The presence of a psychoactive compound in cannabis has been known about for centuries, but research on cannabinoids and the subsequent discovery of CBD in the cannabis plant is less than 100 years old.
Q: Is CBD the same thing as marijuana?
A: No. Marijuana and hemp are BOTH cannabis plants. However, whereas marijuana contains 15 – 40% of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, hemp has a very minimal concentration – 0.3% or less – of THC. As a result, marijuana can make you high, but hemp can’t.
Q: CBD products are everywhere these days – why is this?
A: Ten years ago, CBD was virtually unheard of. However, since the Hemp Farming Act Bill was passed in December, 2018, farmers can now legally grow industrial hemp (meeting that ceiling of 0.3% THC). That bill also opened the door to making CBD derived from industrial hemp legal in all 50 United States because it removed hemp from the DEA’s (Drug Enforcement Agency’s) list of controlled substances.
Q: Why would anyone want to put CBD into a tea?
A: In many ways, wellness teas and CBD are a natural fit. Both tea and CBD have reputed health benefits, although tea has been researched for thousands of years, and CBD only very recently. As a functional tea, an evening CBD tea could replace alcohol for stress relief and relaxation. It could enhance a calming ritual to help prepare the mind and body for a restful night’s sleep, relax the body and quiet the mind in preparation for sleep, without the consequences of alcohol consumption. And on a traditional medicine note, they have both been used for hundreds of years as holistic wellness solutions, and as legend has it, both tea and cannabis were discovered and touted by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong in the 3rd millennium BCE.
Q. Should my business be offering CBD tea options?
A: This is, of course, absolutely up to each business to choose on their own, but here are some of the points we have considered with regards to this question:
- CBD as an ingredient has become the hottest trend in the wellness industry and is rapidly exploding into the mainstream.
- Today’s take on cannabis is very different than it was just a few years ago when CBD was virtually unheard of.
- Revenues from CBD products will soon exceed $1 billion a year, according to multiple sources, including Forbes and Inc. Magazine.
Q: How much CBD would I want to put into tea, and what kind should I use?
A: CBD teas currently on the market generally use 5 -10 mg, which is considered a low or “micro” dose of CBD. They are made either with decarboxylated CBD hemp or with CBD isolate powder. The goal of isolates is to make the CBD more water-soluble and more bioavailable and effective. CBD has increased effectiveness when it’s ingested along with a fat, so suggesting the addition of some fat, like coconut oil, to the infused tea, is what some manufacturers of CBD tea are doing. The CBD molecule doesn’t like water and has a better chance of making its way to the into the body’s receptors for cannabinoids if it is bonded to a fat molecule.
Q: Does The Tea Spot offer CBD tea options?
